Mooresville Graded School District Celebrates Growth and Achievement on North Carolina State Tests

Mooresville, NC — Mooresville Graded School District (MGSD) is proud to announce the positive performance and growth of our students on the 2023 - 2024 North Carolina state achievement tests. These results reflect the hard work, dedication, and commitment of our students, teachers, and staff to academic excellence.

This year, MGSD schools demonstrated strong academic growth across our five schools that are required to administer North Carolina End-of-Year/End-of-Course tests:  Mooresville High School, Mooresville Middle School, Selma Burke Middle School, Mooresville Intermediate School, and East Mooresville Intermediate School. Overall, Mooresville Graded schools had a significant positive change in their growth index score provided by the state when compared to the prior year.  Mooresville High School, Mooresville Middle School, and East Mooresville Intermediate School all exceeded growth.  This distinction is traditionally only awarded to schools in the top 28% of academic growth across the state. When comparing academic growth data from all 47 public and charter schools in Iredell County, the following MGSD schools performed at or near the top:

  • East Mooresville Intermediate School ranks #1 among elementary/intermediate schools (#2 among all schools)

  • Mooresville Middle School ranks #1 among middle schools (#3 among all schools)

  • Mooresville High School ranks #2 among traditional high schools (#5 among all schools)

The district’s emphasis on providing high-quality lessons that make learning engaging while also challenging students to connect to the real world has led to notable improvements in student achievement.

In addition to the outstanding growth shown by Mooresville Graded School District, other highlights of this year’s accountability results include:

  • Ranked #1 in the state for graduation rate at >95%

  • Ranked #7 in the state for ACT performance

  • 4th grade Math proficiency improved by 14%

  • 7th grade Math proficiency improved by 10%

  • 7th grade Reading proficiency improved by 5%

  • English II proficiency improved by 5%

  • Mooresville Middle School improved their school performance score by 18 points, moving from a D to a B rating.

Superintendent Jason Gardner expressed pride in the district's accomplishments, stating, "Our students' success on these assessments is a testament to the quality of education we strive to provide at MGSD. We are incredibly proud of the hard work our students, teachers, and staff have put in, especially considering the challenges of the past few years. This growth reflects our community's commitment to ensuring every student reaches their full potential.  We realize we still have areas of improvement and more room to grow, but we feel good about the positive momentum we are building!”

MGSD’s success is also attributed to the collaborative efforts of teachers, parents, and the broader Mooresville community. "This achievement is a shared victory," said Board Chair Greg Whitfiled. "We are fortunate to have a community that values education and supports our schools in every way possible."

Looking forward, MGSD remains committed to maintaining this momentum and continuing to provide a top-tier education to all students. The district will further target areas for improvement to ensure continued growth and success.

MGSD extends its heartfelt thanks to the students, parents, staff, and community members who have played a pivotal role in these achievements. Together, we will continue to build on this success and strive for even greater accomplishments in the future.
